Use of Commas

Commas are an important part of writing. They make pauses between phrases or words that makes understanding the sentence easier. Without them we would be very confused reading. There are different times when we uses commas.

1.When writing a sentence with a conjuction such as and,but,or a comma is used before the word.

I went to the zoo, and saw a panda

2.After using an introductory adverb at the beginning of a sentence, a comma is added.

Sadly, I got sick and could not go to the party.

3.We use a comma when we are specifying the topic we are talking about is not something else.

I saw a cat, not a dog, when I went to my friend's house.

4.When you start a sentence with yes or no, you add a comma after the word.

No, I didn't see an otter at the zoo.

5.Commas should be added after using two adjectives in a row.

I saw the beautiful, graceful dancers at the ballet.

6.Use a comma when directly addressing a person in a sentence.

Amy, were you able to finish the homework?
